Value added: Hong Kong's pattern on Asian values

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten and Singapore statesman Lee Kuan Yew have different opinions about 'Asian values' but both men share a similar understanding regarding welfare. Governor Patten recently gave a speech in the UK where he identified 'a belief in progress' as the 'single most important factor' of lessons that had impressed him while in Hong Kong. Mr. Lee recently delivered a speech in Germany suggesting that state welfare programs overlook a human instinct that people need an incentive in order to succeed.

The Timor gap

Article Abstract:

The production by Indonesian car manufacturer Timor Putra Nasional of an inexpensive 'national car' has not had the negative impact on other car manufacturers which had originally been anticipated. Indeed, the national car venture now seems to be encountering difficulties, with buyer interest waning. Timor Putra is permitted to import 45,000 cars duty-free from South Korea, where they are manufactured by joint venture partner Kia Motors, but as of Jan 01, 1997, only 16,000 had actually been shipped into Indonesia.
