Europe and Asia can be closer

Article Abstract:

Relations between Europe and Asia are overshadowed by misunderstandings and stereotyped views. Politicians must now address this issue and consider ways in which barriers to closer relations between Asia and Europe can be abolished. There has been some progress already, including plans to create an Asia-Europe foundation to promote the exchange of people between the two continents and for an action plan to help in dealing with practical barriers to trade. It would be very useful to have many European business-school students spending time in European subsidiaries in Asia, and vice versa.

Truth or consequences: Japan chokes on a war apology

Article Abstract:

Tomiichi Murayama's Socialist-led govt threatens to collapse amid the debate over its demanded apology to the world for aggression and abuses during World War II. Many Japanese apologists twist reality to claim Japan was liberating Asia, and many of those are powerful politicians, so the apology has been slow in coming and unconvincing in its current outlines. While Japan's neighbors did not ask for such an apology, the current debacle cannot persuade them of Japan's goodwill and repentance for past deeds.
