Wake up and smell the opportunity

Article Abstract:

The protectionist environment has resulted in the stagnant growth of the Canadian magazine industry. Gross revenues for the period from 1991-1996 have flattened at around C$250 million, with the magazines representing a mere 4% of total national advertising. To boost revenues, Canadian publishers should allow advertiser access to US magazine spill such as by forming joint ventures with US publishers. The proposed Bill C-55 which seeks to ban Canadian advertiser access to US publications will only stifle the growth of the industry.

Halifax aims for superport status

Article Abstract:

The Halifax Port Authority of Nova Scotia is positioning itself to be a 'superport' in its bid to attract the ships operated by Charlotte, NC- based SeaLand and Copenhagen, Denmark-based Maersk. The port is expected to cost the city of Halifax, Canada, C$400 million. City officials hope that the port's natural abilities, such as a deep harbor and the fact that ships are already passing right by Halifax on their way to New York, will allow it to beat Baltimore, MD, and New York, NY.
