Watch-dogfight

Article Abstract:

Governments allocate airport slots to airlines and this affects the profitability of airlines in congested airports. Slots have been secretly allocated in ways that have hindered competition. The European Union commissioner, Karel van Miert, argues that American Airlines and British Airways should not receive compensation for surrendering slots. Regulators have a right to do this since slots are not assets owned by airlines. Open auction should also replace the slot allocation system.
