Water in, water out

Article Abstract:

Water levels in the Everglades National Park have dropped to half those of 50 years before 1999, since drainage canals have been used to dry the land and supply drinking water. The population of the south of Florida has risen. Water reaching the Everglades is often contaminated. A proposal to increase water supply to the Everglades and provide water for reservoirs was announced in Oct 1998. Congress will vote on the plans in Jul 1999. Real estate companies argue that too much land will be used for the project, and ecologists also have objections to the plan.

Precipitation problems

Article Abstract:

Parts of China have been affected by floods, yet other parts of the country lack an adequate water supply. Deforestation and soil erosion have contributed to flood damage along the Yangzi River, while northern China faces a water shortage which restricts the kind of economic activities that can be carried out. There have been plans to draw water from the Yellow River, but these plans have led to protests from areas downstream such as Shandong. Reforestation projects are being carried out in dry areas which may help boost rainfall over the long term.
