Weak exports foil expectations of a boom
Article Abstract:
Asian weak exports thwarted the region's expected export upsurge following predictions that Asian exports would rise amid falling currencies. The low Asian demand for foreign goods is affecting both high-technology and low-technology exporters outside Asia. For instance, Australian exports of beef to Indonesia reached 75 metric tons in January 1998, as opposed to 2,585 tons in 1997. Either an Asian export boom or an Asian import failure would prove damaging to other countries.
