Welcome to bull country

Article Abstract:

Those who remain optimistic about the future of world stock markets explain the current strong rise in market values by arguing that small investors are now strongly attracted to equities. Bulls believe this trend will continue indefinitely. This view is gaining support from economists, who now have a strong belief in the concept of the New Investor. Economists may be turning to this view because they remain confused by the equity premium, the average additional return investors expect to obtain above that on safer investments if they invest in less safe equities instead.

A wobble down Wall Street

Article Abstract:

The sharp fall in the Dow Jones Industrial Average has prompted experts to reconsider the prospects for US equities. Some observers believe that a cyclical bear market has started, even though the signs which have been associated with bear markets in the past, such as rising interest rates, are generally not present. The most convincing argument in favour of believing that a bear market is emerging is that the decline in the Dow Jones indicates that the pessimistic mood that has already become established in most of the market has now spread to the blue chips.
