Welcome to the third party

Article Abstract:

The introduction of the UK Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999 will have serious implications for architects who may find they face a greater chance of being sued. As a result the cost of professional insurance is likely to increase. Architects should be very careful when they arrange a contract as third party rights can not be altered, without permission, once they have been granted. The act is unlimited therefore the architect will find it difficult to determine the level of risk in an contract. The act is due to be implemented from May 11, 2000.

Helping disabled people escape

Article Abstract:

Plans to introduce legislation in the UK which would prevent building owners limiting the number of disabled people having access on safety grounds will force owners to reconsider evacuation plans in place for the disabled. The Disability Discrimination Act will mean building owners making some minor structural changes to access points with a major rethink of evacuation plans being implemented. All staff will need to know how to undertake a personal emergency egress plan which explains evacuation methods most suitable when dealing with disabled people.
