What a spectacle
Article Abstract:
A referendum on electoral law is scheduled in Italy in April 1999, a president will be selected in May, and local and European elections are scheduled for Jun 1999. There are unstable alliances between parties, and a new party has been set up by former prime minister, Romano Prodi. The activities of politicians from the political left and center bear resemblances to second-rate opera, while the politicians on the right appear to be off-stage.

Article Abstract:
Italy and Japan both claim to be democracies, yet they have been controlled by the same political parties for over 40 years. The next elections in these nations should change things, but probably will not.
