What ails Cuba's health service?

Article Abstract:

Cuba's health service is affected by lack of resources. The country is poor and cannot easily pay for imports. The end of aid from the Soviet Union, and the US embargo on imports have meant that basic medical supplies such as antibiotics, sterile dressings and painkillers are often unavailable in hospitals. Some well-equipped hospitals cater for tourists who bring in foreign currency by paying for their treatment, and well-connected Cubans can sometimes use these hospitals. Physicians work long hours for little pay. Despite the shortages, Cuba still has a good performance in terms of infant mortality' life expectancy, and control of infectious diseases.
