When do start-ups that exploit patented academic knowledge survive?
Article Abstract:
The interaction between radicalness of technology and patent scope and industry concentration on the likelihood of firm failure for university start-up companies is examined. The unique data set of 128 firms founded to commercialize technologies licensed from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) between 1980 and 1996 show that technological radicalness and patent scope reduce new firm failure in the context of fragmented markets.

Assessing the impact of university science parks on research productivity: exploratory firm-level evidence from the United Kingdom
Article Abstract:
An examination to determine whether companies located on university science parks in the United Kingdom have higher research productivity than observationally equivalent firms not located on a university science park is carried out. The results are consistent with the mentioned hypothesis and are robust to the use of alternative econometric procedures to assess relative productivity.

The anchor tenant hypothesis: exploring the role of large, local, R&D-intensive in regional innovation systems
Article Abstract:
The geographic co-location of university research and industrial R&D in three technology areas are examined. The hypothesis that the presence of a large, local, R&D-intensive firm enhances the regional innovation system is developed such that local university research is more likely to be absorbed by and to simulate local industrial R&D.
