Where is it going?

Article Abstract:

The new German government has encountered a number of problems such as divisions within the coalition on immigration and tax, and between the government and German and European central banks on interest rates. There is also a difference of approach between the chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, who aims to develop close links with employers, and Social Democrat party chairman, Oskar Lafontaine, who has built up power at the finance ministry. Lafontaine may have to be removed from his post as party chairman if Schroder is to stay in control.

The seeds of discord

Article Abstract:

There are divisions within the German coalition government which are unlikely to disappear, and there are also differences between Oskar Lafontaine, finance minister, and the German chancellor, Gerhard Schroder. Lafontaine failed to become candidate for chancellor in 1990, and is thought to harbor a desire to be chancellor. The Social Democratic party was able to govern with the aid of the Greens, and this means that divisions between Lafontaine and Schroder are more apparent than if a wider coalition had been formed.

Oskar Lafontaine's commanding German presence

Article Abstract:

German Social Democratic party chairman, Oskar Lafontaine, initially sought to become chancellor of Germany, and failed to achieve this in 1990. Lafonatine was educated by Jesuits and, like Germany's new chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, has been married several times. Lafontaine may be given the post of finance minister in Germany's new government. He could be useful in curbing demands for increased government spending, since he has the political weight to resist such demands.
