Where next in Ulster?

Article Abstract:

The new government in Northern Ireland is likely to be suspended by Northern Ireland secretary. Peter Mandelson, following a dispute over disarmament. The Irish Republican Army (IRA) has been called on to give up some weapons, and the first minister, David Trimble, has threatened to resign if the IRA does not comply with his demands. There is concern that the peace process could be reversed if the Northern Irish assembly is suspended. There is concern that disorder could arise from both elements of both republicans and unionists who are opposed to the peace process.

Ulster in peril

Article Abstract:

The peace process in Northern Ireland has encountered problems, and progress has been slow in a number of areas, such as setting up bodies linking Northern Ireland with Ireland. This means that the scheduled devolution of power from the United Kingdom planned for Mar 10 1999 is threatened. The peace process should not be frozen on the grounds that the Irish Republican Army (IRA) refuses to surrender its arms, though surrendering weapons would help to promote peace. Pressure should be put on the IRA, but the peace agreement should be adhered to.

Enemies and colleagues

Article Abstract:

A new government has been set up in Northern Ireland, heralding progress in the peace process. The Irish Republican Army (IRA) appears likely to send a representative to an international body dealing with disarmament. The relationship between Britain and Northern Ireland has changed, with Britain no longer 'the sovereign power'. There will be challenges for the Republicans in terms of the constraints they will find on education and health policy.
