The off-trade market for whisky in the UK increased 28% in volume between 1991 and 1995. In 1995, whisky accounted for 53% of the 181 million litres of total spirits sold, and by the year 2000 it is expected to account for 54%. The whisky market is dominated by United Distillers, Highland Distillers, and Allied Domecq. The value of the UK rum market rose by only 18% in real terms in 1991-95, to 3.6 million pounds sterling, while the volume of sales fell by 7.6% to nearly 122,000 lt. Volume sales of dark rum fell from 65,000 hectolitres to 53,000 hectolitres during this period, while white rum sales rose by 4%. White rum is more popular with younger drinkers. The leading white rum brand is Bacardi, accounting for 77% of volume sales in 1995, while own-label brands accounted for 10% of sales.
