Who will join Europe's club - and when

Article Abstract:

The European Union (EU) has a number of applicants for membership and appears to be delaying the schedule for the strongest applicants to join. There are a number of contentious issues such as farm subsidies and labor mobility. There is also the question of the extent to which Poland is prepared for entry, since delaying entry could mean that public opinion moves against joining the EU, yet Poland is so large that problems could arise if Poland joins without being properly prepared.

Looking west, looking east

Article Abstract:

There is much political and public support in Poland for joining the European Union (EU), but apathy could still jeopardise the yes camp's prospects in a referendum. Before joining the EU, Poland needs to resolve difficult issues including agricultural policy and land sales to foreigners.

The Poles bargain with Europe

Article Abstract:

Poland aims to join the European Union (EU) though this is not likely to occur prior to 2005, according to most EU negotiators. Poland has enacted a law that prohibits the purchase of Polish farmland by foreigners for 18 years, with a similar ban on industrial land purchases for six years. The length of this ban is likely to be shortened as a result of negotiations. Farm land in Poland tends to be a tenth of the price of land in the EU, and there is concern that foreigners could buy much of Poland's farm land.
