Swiss Winterthur insurance group, which belongs to Credit Suisse Group (CS), aims to promote its Austrian subsidiary to one of the top ten insurance firms in Austria. Within a few years' time the market share in the life insurance sector is to be raised from 1.7% to more than 2%, in the damage/accident insurance sector from 1% to 1.2%. After the acquisition of Neuenburger Transportversicherung in 1997, however, Winterthur sees currently no possible takeover target, nor a suitable joint venture partner (insurer or bank). Thanks to its selective subscription policy, Winterthur Austria's damage quota is only 56%, which is 10%-points below market average. However, the cost ratio is poor. A new computer system enabling agents to issues policies directly is to improve the situation.

Article Abstract:

According to well-informed sources, US motorbike manufacturer Harley-Davidson will be the new ally of Austrian motorbike maker KTM. The management denied that a decision has been taken and said the final decision would be announced on the World Motorcycle Show in Munich on 15 Sep 1998. Other possible partners would have been BMW, Aprilia or Ducati. According to insiders, Harley Davidson and KTM would match well because their product ranges do not compete, but complement each other. This would help the aim of KTM chairman Stefan Pierer to break the dominance of Japanese manufacturers Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha, which control 75% of the world motorbike market.

According to the Austrian insurer Interunfall, subsidiary of the Generali group, only 30% of life insurance policies are held by women. Previous advertising campaigns targeted at women have not changed the situation: as a result, women only convinced their husbands to insure themselves. Now, Interunfall has introduced a "women's premium" which compensates for the different life expectancies of women and men. Because women life longer than men on the average, they will have to pay lower premiums to save the same capital as men.
