Aspirant gold miners have invaded Yanoami Indian land in Brazil's Roraima Province since 1987. The government has cleared out the miners a few times but they keep coming back. Sharing of land and resources is possible but is beyond the Yanoamis' current negotiating skills.

Peasants farmers and gold prospectors are increasingly demanding what they perceive is their due. The farmers demand ownerships of land, and the gold prospectors demand rights to gold on land claimed by Indians or big business.

Brazil still has a legacy of ethnic discrimination from its colonial past. Racial boundaries have blurred due to intermarriage, and race hate is not a key issue, but prejudice is a problem for brown and black Brazilians.
