Article Abstract:

The Cyberspace Centre at the Hong Kong Unversity of Science and Technology has developed a smart card system which can safeguard Internet shopping. The system includes a personal smart card and a card reading device connected to a home PC. The card user need to load money on the card by visiting his bank's web site. Whenever he makes purchase on virutal shops, the payment will be deducted from his smart card. It only requires a password, without any credit card information or personal details. The centre is seeking partners to commercialise the system in Hong Kong or China. *

Smart-card solution for China

Article Abstract:

Schlumberger has become the first company to launch a complete smart-card solution in China. This includes the smart cards, the point-of-sale terminals, security access module and personalisation services. Its Qianflex smart card was designed to provide China with a national chip-card standard to help modernise China's banking system. The card can be reloaded via the People's Bank of China's ATM machines. Meanwhile, the terminals are able to display instructions in Chinese and English, as well as are portable due to its infra-red technology. *

French firm rolls out smart cards

France-based Schlumberger is believed to be the first company to launch a complete smart-card solution in China. The smart-card solution includes smart cards namely Qianflex, Point-of-Sale terminals, Security Access Module and Personalisation services. Qianflex, which is designed to provide a national chip-card standard to help modernise China's banking system, has been specified by the People's Bank of China. *
