AT&T, Time Warner team up
Article Abstract:
AT&T Corp. announced a joint venture with Time Warner Inc. The venture will use Time Warner's wires to offer local phone service to residential and small-business customers in Massachusetts and 32 other states. The deal, along with AT&T's pending $48 billion purchase of Tele-Communications Inc., will give the phone company potential access to 40 percent of all the households in the US. AT&T officials said that the percentage will increase to over 60 percent as more joint ventures are created. AT&T is trying to create partnerships with MediaOne, the biggest cable provider in Massachusetts, and Cablevision Systems Corp., which provides services to Boston, Brookline, and over 50 other communities in Massachusetts.

20-year cable deal signed by AT&T, Time Warner

AT & T Corp. has signed a 20-year exclusive telephone contract with Time Warner. This deal, along with the telephone company's intention to purchase Tele-Communications Inc., gives AT&T the opportunity to provide local phone service to 40 percent of American households over cable lines. AT&T would like to create partnerships with more cable firms so it can provide local phone service through cable to a minimum of 60 percent of US homes. It has spoken to Philadelphia, PA-based Comcast Corp. about such a partnership.
