Coffee Vest Co. recycles coffee bags into ties and other accessories at the Aspinwall, PA, house of its owners, Bonnie and Alan Epstein. Established in 1992, the company buys material from coffee stores that sell estate coffee, which is shipped in 100-pound bags. The Epsteins, who buy the empty bags for about $1 a piece, remove any leftover coffee beans from the sacks, wash the bags and press them with an iron. Bonnie sew them into their proper shapes piece-by-piece. The couple then sell the bags and vests at at shows and on their Web site.

Microsonic Inc., based in Ambridge, PA, has find its niche by producing earmolds for old-fashioned, two-piece, behind-the-ear hearing aids. Established by Miklos Major, the 20-employee company has seen its sales jump at a rate of over 5% annually. Microsonic, which advertises only in trade magazines, sells to 3,200 institutions in every state and Puerto Rico and licenses its process to companies in Australia and Canada. The company, which has a laboratory in Budapest, Hungary, owns four patents and maintains a Web site (www.earmolds.com).

A model future

3Data of Downtown Pittsburgh, PA, is a maker of three-dimensional models of office furnitures. The firm, established by Pat McKiernan in 1996, intends to take advantage of the increasing reliance of architects on computers to make 3-D images of their blueprints. 3Data, which plans to create it own niche by integrating its designs into those 3-D models, claims to have had preliminary discussions regarding its services with 10 office furniture makers and about as many architects and interior designers.
