Canadian firm to buy Maier's
Article Abstract:
George Weston Ltd. of Toronto, Canada, is set to purchase Maier's Bakery of Pennsylvania for an undisclosed amount. The purchase of Maier's, which is not Weston's initial transaction in Pennsylvania, is set to enhance Weston's businesses that include fisheries, forest products, food processing and food distribution. Weston, which has annual revenues worth $14 billion, stated that it will operate Maier's as part of Horsham, PA-based Stroehmann Bakeries, which it purchased in 1980. Maier's is to retain its brand name in its bread lines, such as Maier's Italian, Roman Meal and Sunbeam.

Japanese firm to buy division of Centocor
Article Abstract:
Centocor Inc (Malvern, PA) will sell its diagnostics division to Fujirebio Inc of Tokyo, Japan for $37.5 million. The diagnostics unit brought in 17% of Centocor's $200 million in revenues for 1997, and its sale will bring an after-tax gain of approximately $15 million. The diagnostics unit, which makes tumor marker assays and imaging products for cancer and dead heart tissue detection, was decreasing in sales and did not fit with Centocor's emerging focus on pharmaceuticals. Centocor now has four pharmaceutical products on the market including the heart medicine ReoPro.
