Comcast in deal to acquire key cable properties

Comcast Corp. said that it has reached an agreement for a future controlling interest in Prime Communications LLC's cable properties. The properties are located in Maryland, Virginia, and Chicago. Comcast has agreed to pay $1.45 billion in debt and equity for the properties. The deal is part of the company's strategy to acquire new cable properties. The strategy is designed to expand the number of Comcast subscribers in regional areas, as well as to enhance the firm's national and financial strength. Under the deal, Comcast will be permitted to purchase cable networks that provide service to 290,000 customers in Maryland and Virginia, and 140,000 in Chicago.

Cable deal ties Harron to Aldelphia

Adelphia Communications Corp. announced that it will by Harron Communications' cable systems for $1.2 billion in cash. The sale by Harron is Adelphia's third acquisition of more than $1 billion in two months. The purchase will make Adelphia the fourth-largest cable company in the nation, following Time Warner, AT&T and Comcast Corp. Including pending purchases, Adelphia will have roughly five million subscribers.
