Company grew from blankets to board room

David Einstein founded Commercial Office Furniture of Philadelphia in 1946 under the name Commercial Trading Co. He began selling all kinds of goverment surplus including horse blankets from World War I. Under the leadership of David Einstein, his son Alan, who joined the company in 1970, and Joan Waters, who came on board in 1988, the company has grown to the point where profits were $16 million in 1998.

The tax abatements granted to help build Keystone Opportunity Improvement Zone and two other buildings is expected to cost Philadelphia millions and halt tax-law changes. The Center City District, a municipal services and economic development agency, analyzed the impact of granting tax-cutting Keystone Opportunity Improvement Zone status to help build office buildings at a time of rising vacancy rates.
