Jefferson planning to reduce its payroll

The Jefferson Health System announced yesterday that it would like to save money through employee attrition and, maybe, some layoffs. The company's cost-cutting might be the first example of the effect of increasing costs, especially for malpractice insurance premiums and for labor, on the Philadelphia region's health-care industry.

Creditors of Pennsylvania's bankrupt Allegheny health system have agreed to drop their claims in exchange for about $25 million. The deal will allow Allegheny to finalize the sale of its 4 Pittsburgh-area hospitals to the Western Pennsylvania Healthcare System, according to West Penn CEO Charles M. O'Brien Jr. The 65,000 creditors are owed over $1.5 billion. Officials of the two hospital chains hope to complete the sale by late May 1999.

Jefferson to lay off 125, drop 250 jobs

Philadelphia, Penn.-based Jefferson University Hospitals, which is facing a deficit of $21 million, has announced 125 job cuts as it seeks to reduce costs. Hospital officials, which report problems such as increased costs of health-care technology and lower rates of payments for health services, have said that the health care network will also eliminate 250 vacant job positions.
