Genesis nursing home care is 'unpredictable,' union asserts

Genesis Health Ventures Inc. is criticized by the Service Employees International Union, a union that represents 100,000 nursing home workers, for its "inconsistent" and "unpredictable" service. The union, which inquired into Genesis' public records of state health inspections of nursing homes, contends that the company's service vary in quality. Genesis operates over 300 nursing homes in Philadelphia such as the Cobbs Creek Nursing Center in Southwest Philadelphia that was ordered for closure by the state Health Department in June 1998.

The Delaware River ports have become the leaders in winter fruit imports for the Eastern United States, more of it coming from Chile than any other country. The economy of Philadelphia and South Jersey benefits to the tune of $68 million. Officials of the International Longshoremen's Association, however, claim that wages are being lowered by the competition among the terminals on the Delaware. This article is accompanied by a graph showing the fruit imports to Philadelphia and Camden.
