Getting lean: we can't do it alone

Article Abstract:

Boeing has embraced the concept of lean manufacturing in its relationship with its suppliers in an effort to reduce cycle time, inventory levels and rework. The company, particularly its Wing Responsibility Center, has reduced its manufacturing time by 85% using the concept. The steps undertaken by the firm in implementing the concept is enumerated. With the utilization of lean manufacturing, the company has been able to smooth out the manufacturing processes, as well as make strategic decisions about buying, contracts and planning.

US Airways has ordered 124 planes from Airbus in line with an aggressive expansion plan. The A319, the first of the new aircraft that are set to replace the carrier's current fleet, was delivered in Pittsburgh, PA, on Nov. 9, 1998. The 120-seat Airbus A319 and the other models to be delivered by Airbus boasts of ample space for the greater comfort of passengers aside from additional amenities such as computerized seating charts in flight attendant's galleys and video monitors that drop from the ceiling.

British Airways managing to maintain a stiff upper lip

Article Abstract:

British Airways is dealing with dissatisfaction from customers and shareholders by reducing costs and introducing new services. The airline is moving away from Boeing 747 jets to the smaller 777s. It also plans to install in business class lounge chairs that convert into beds. The company is also working to overcome the ill will generated by the flight attendants' strike of 1997.
