Latest changes at Penn Health System have some optimistic

The financially troubled University of Pennsylvania Health System, which had hired Hunter Group to provide consultant services, has now terminated the contract. UPHS, which lost $198 million in 1999 and laid off 20 percent of its workforce, also hired Peter G. Traber as its chief executive officer to replace outgoing Robert Martin.

Philadelphia, Penn.-based Jefferson Health System has followed a conservative strategy to achieve financial success. The health care company earned $1.9 billion in 1999 compared to $1.8 billion in 1998.
