Mastech, based in Oakdale, PA, is arguably at the focal point of a debate regarding the recruitment of foreign nationals for high-technology jobs in the US. Founded by Indian immigrants Ashok Trevdi, Sunil Wadhwani and another partner in 1986, Mastech concentrates on providing specialized technology and software consulting services to small firms, mostly in remote places worldwide. While it employs 3,500 workers across the globe with a supposed average salary of $59,800, only 2,000 of these personnel occupy jobs in the US. In addition, more than 1,700 of these US workers are foreign nationals who are working temporarily in the country on so-called H1B visas. It may be noted that some believe American firms should be permitted to hire the most qualified employees, regardless of nationality.

Dormont Technologies has an able and experienced chief financial officer and treasurer in the person of Philip A. Compton. Compton approaches his latest job with a sense of detachment saying that it may be his most enjoyable job to date. For almost 15 years, he worked in various types of high-tech firms as a financial specialist. Dormont offers a music marketing management program called Startracker that permits record labels to send press releases, e-mail messages or sound files to media executives. The North Hills, PA-based firm owns a 4,600-sq-ft headquarters which features fraternity-house decor and a one-time bar.

Fore Systems plans on doubling in size

Fore Systems, a manufacturer of networking equipment headquartered in Warrendale, PA, intends to expand its headquarters facility by 600,000-sq-ft. The move is part of the efforts of the company to enhance its capacity in Warrendale by 100%. The expansion, which is also expected to lead to the creation of 1,000 additional posts, will involve the construction of three buildings on the headquarters site. The expansion reflects the firm's commitment to address the shortage of space in the headquarters facility to accomodate Fore System's growth.
