Heinz adds 4 outsiders to its board
Article Abstract:
H.J. Heinz Co. of Pittsburgh, PA, plans to add four new outside members to its board of directors, giving it 12 outsiders and nine insiders. The company was recently criticized for having a board which lacked independence because it was filled with insiders and long-time members. Candace K. Bryan, chairman and CEO of Kendle International Inc.; Mary C. Choksi, managing director of Strategic Investment Partners Inc. and Emerging Markets Investors Corp.; James M. Zimmerman, chairman and CEO of Federated Department Stores Inc.; and Leonard Coleman, president of National League baseball are among the candidates being considered for the board.

Out of the soup
Article Abstract:
Pittsburgh, PA-based H.J. Heinz Co. can finally have Daniel J. O'Neill as executive vice president in charge of its tuna and pet food food operations based in Newport, KY. O'Neill was hired by the company in January 1997. However, Campbell Soup Co., O'Neill's former employer, said that the deal violated O'Neill's 18-month no-compete contract. Under the settlement terms, O'Neill agreed to stay with Campbell until September 1998 and until then, he would be closely watched. Now, the restrictions have ended and he is now free to run Heinz's pet food and Star-Kist seafood operations.
