Jones plans to buy rival apparel firm

Jones Apparel Group Inc., a Bristol, PA-based apparel maker, has announced plans to acquire rival clothing company Sun Apparel Inc. for $212 million. New York, NY-based Sun Apparel designs, manufactures and supplies jeanswear, sports apparel and other clothing for men, women and children under several brands, including Polo, which is licensed from Polo Ralph Lauren. The agreement calls for Jones to buy Sun's equity for the sum of roughly $212 million, made up of around $125 million in cash and roughly 4.8 million shares of Jones common stock, which could undergo final adjustments at the close of trading.

Holt Group charts a course for its survival

The seaport enterprise plans restructuring that will help it pay down $318 million of debt. One way will be to sell its non-core assets. A major setback occurred in 1997 when the family business, Holt Group Inc., bought NPR Holding Corp. which included the Navieras steamship line. The line is still in a dispute over moving its port from NY and NJ to Philadelphia.
