NLRB issues wide order against Beverly
Article Abstract:
The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has ordered Beverly Enterprises, a nursing chain with around 70,000 employees at 576 homes across the US, to end supposedly anti-union practices, which range from threats and coercion, to surveillance. Although the NLRB unsuccessfully tried to mandate a corporate-wide cease and desist order against Beverly in 1994, after it was unable to prove widespread abuse, the latest directive is buttressed by a long pattern of anti-union behavior over three consolidated cases, involving 240 alleged labor-law violations committed at 54 various facilities in 18 states. The NLRB supported its claim that corporate and regional headquarters controlled labor relations at individual facilities, by citing proof of wrongdoing by middle-level and upper-level managers.

Pittsburgh Brewing finds a small partner
Article Abstract:
Pittsburgh Brewing Co. of Lawrenceville, PA, has signed a tentative deal to merge with Pittsburgh, PA-based Independence Brewery Co., said Independence Brewery chairman Robert W. Conner Jr. The move is in line with Pittsburgh Brewery's game plan to acquire more brands and grow from a $40-million plus company to a $100-milion company over the next couple of years. The deal would also fulfill the ambition of Pittsburgh's lead investor Joseph Piccirilli to turn Pittsburgh Brewing, the brewers of Iron City beer, into a publicly-held company again.
