Genco Distribution System in Blawnox, PA, is a century-old firm that has found a niche for making software that keeps track of the chaotic process of returned merchandise. The firm has also been leasing warehouse space to Pittsburgh, PA-area users but since 1989 when it first developed software for such as job, its revenue climbed from some $18 million to $105 million in 1998. Genco recruited more programmers and began marketing its services as software provider and return center operator to cater to the loads of merchandise that do not sell. Among the firm's current clients are Ames, Chesebrough-Pond's, Kmart, Federated Department Stores and Sears.

Crown isn't resting easy

Crown American Realty Trust is close to the conclusion of its $465 million loan, which will free almost half of its properties and allow it to expand. Executives of the 26-year old mall owner and operator are becoming more confident of being a national player via the eventual purchase of malls across the US, with the cash infusion. Crown American, which let down analysts shortly after it debuted on the stock market in 1993, remains committed to dominating its emerging markets. Company Chief Financial Officer John M. Kriak, surmised that the market is just waiting for Crown American to overcome the last financial uncertainty.

Levin Furniture Co. at Smithton of Westmoreland County, PA, is an 80-year old that sells furniture through the 11 stores it operates across Western Pennsylvania and Ohio. Company President Robert Levin boasts that the retailer sells the most furniture than any other Western Pennsylvania business and gives credit to volume for their success. Levin believes that a substantial volume is prerequisite to becoming at least marginally lucrative in the business. Levin also revealed that Levin Furniture's five-year business plan involves maintaining volume by expanding existing stores.
