Steelmakers cry for help against imports
Article Abstract:
US steel manufacturers have filed charges of unfair trade practices against their rivals in Russia, Brazil and Japan at the US Department of Commerce. The steelmakers are accusing the foreign steel producers of receiving unfair government subsidies and of exporting their products at prices that are 28% to 199% less than their cost of production. US steel import from the three countries, which has experienced an 81% increase for the first seven months of 1998, is responsible for most of the steel imports for 1998 that is expected to go beyond the 31 million tons imported in 1997.

Steelmakers ride crest of demand
Article Abstract:
Steelmakers are busy in light of a strong market demand. At the annual meeting of North American steelmakers in Toronto, Canada, U.S. Steel President Paul J. Wilhelm believes the industry can overcome the peak-and-valley business cycle that has hounded steelmakers in the past. Wilhelm made this confident assessment as the automotive business, a major consumer of sheet steel, stays strong. Meanwhile, Wilhelm also dismissed speculation that industry players should look for merger partners to gain leverage with clients and find their way into global markets.
