Stocks skid, led by Amazon and Microsoft

The US stock market declined further on July 23, 2004, due by lower-than-expected earnings from Microsoft and Amazon.com, sending the Dow Jones industrials below 10,000. For the fourth consecutive week, all three indexes ended the week lower as investors sold stocks across all sectors and industries, with technology and consumer staples being the worst affected.

Wall Street ended a year of gains with a small decline in October 2004 as investors made adjustments to portfolios in light holiday trading. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 17.29 or 0.16 percent to 10,783.01 while the S&P 500 index was down 1.63, or 0.13 percent, at 1,211.92 and the Nasdaq lost 2.90, or 0.13 percent, to 2175.44.
