US Airways labor pact runs into turbulence
Article Abstract:
US Airways tentative contract negotiated by the company union is facing stiff opposition from 78 cities where the firm operates and has been rejected in Pittsburgh, PA. The International Association of Machinists, representing the 6,500 baggage handlers and and other service workers at the company, declined to officially discuss poll results until ballot counting is concluded. The five-year contract includes a salary increase of 9.23% for majority of union members within six months and a 4% lump-sum bonus, then wage hikes will be based on the average salary of four rivals of US Airways. However, workers who rejected the labor accord expressed concern on job security, medical coverage, pensions, part-time work and contracting-out of work in smaller US Airways stations.
