US Airways' new chief sends letter to unions

The new chief executive officers of US Airways has sent a conciliatory letter to the airline's unhappy employees promising to work with them to save the company, but has repeated his predecessor's warning about concessions and sacrifices. Bruce R. Lakefield, 60, abruptly replaced David N. Siegel on 19 April 2004 just after the directors had asked for Siegel's resignation.

The US Airways canceled roughly 450 flights over the holiday weekend because of bad weather or worker shortages, with 540 baggage handlers and flight attendants systemwide calling in sick, exacerbating the weather-related cancellations and already-tight staffing. Due to this, the booking done by the travel agents were hampered in the peak season of Christmas.
