Union protests cuts at Episcopal Hospital
Article Abstract:
Roughly 75 nurses and technicians from Episcopal Hospital protested salary and employment reductions by the hospital's new owner. The 140-bed hospital, located at Lehigh Avenue and Front Street, was purchased by Temple University Health System in July of 1998, but the sale did not officially close until last week. The nurses and technicians, who have been represented by the Health Professionals and Allied Employees union for two years, had signed a two-year contract with the hospital in 1997 that guaranteed certain salary increases and employment standards. According to union president Ann Twomey, since the sale took place, Temple has not kept its part of the contract or acknowledged the union.

SmithKline plans to sell two divisions
Article Abstract:
SmithKline Beecham revealed yesterday that it planned to sell its lab-testing and pharmaceutical-benefits divisions to focus on its expanding primary business of manufacturing pharmaceuticals and consumer products. Analysts said that this action will probably lead to layoffs in the Philadelphia, PA area. SmithKline's decision came as the drug firm announced an 8 percent rise in 1998 earnings over 1997. The plan will have the greatest local impact on the 2,400 people who work for the company's Clinical Laboratories division, located in Collegeville.
