Would-be suppliers take lessons in building ships the Kvaerner way; unlike the Navy, the civilian manufacturer will stockpile nothing
Article Abstract:
Kvaerner ASA's Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard is demanding its suppliers adapt to European ways of doing things. Pennsylvania suppliers used to doing business with the now-closed Philadelphia Naval Shipyard must adapt to Kvaerner's refusal to stockpile supplies or accept cold calls from salespeople. Kvaerner usually buys only turn-key systems instead of parts, and plans to deal with only about 200 companies, which are expected to offer ideas along with their more tangible goods. Tom O'Malley of Excel Welding and Industrial Supply Inc went to Europe to study a Kvaerner yard and its suppliers, a trip which helped him win a Kvaerner contract in Philadelphia.
