A dash for the exit

Article Abstract:

An increasing number of public companies are going private. In the UK, the number of firms that have delisted from the stock exchange has increased from just four in 1996 to 27 in 1998. While this is a tiny portion of the total number of companies listed on the main London bourse, the trend toward delisting is expected to continue particularly among small businesses. The decision is encouraged by the unattractive share prices and the lack of interest from institutional investors. Institutions have been withdrawing from small companies because they cannot the justify the costs of monitoring small stocks which usually have low liquidity. Mergers and acquisitions between institutions have also been a factor in lessening the appeal of small stocks to institutional investors. As institutions grow bigger, they become less interested in smaller firms.
