Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co. (Mataki City, Philippines), which has a net worth of Ps35 billion and total assets of Ps243 billion at the end of the 1st half, 1997, is the largest bank in the Philippines. Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co. (MetroBank) became the largest bank in the Philippines after launching an aggressive branch expansion program in 1992. In 1996, MetroBank opened up 35 branches in the Philippines, plus branches in Taiwan and Japan and an office in England.

Asiamoney's Best Commercial Bank award winners in countries ranging from Australia to Thailand are briefly profiled. National Australia Bank has one of the banking industry's lowest cost-to-income ratios, and its 1996 net profit was a record A$2 billion. State Bank of India, with 21% of total deposits and 24% of total banking assets, dominate's India's banking industry.

Privatisation prospects

Article Abstract:

International bankers are looking to Asia and Australia for privatization as a way of financing big projects. Australia has already become a major player in privatization with large financing projects already successfully completed. Bankers' hopes that privatization will spread throughout Asia are becoming reality as prospects in Korea and Thailand arise.
