A small business owner's primer of equity financing
Article Abstract:
Sources of equity financing for the small business owner are discussed. Informal sources of funding include friends and relatives, private investors, business contacts and employees. More formal sources of funding include private placement of stocks and public offering of stocks. 'Seed capital' refers to money available for new ventures that are no more than ideas, whereas venture capital refers to businesses that have some operating history. The procedures for obtaining venture capital, and raising capital through public offerings and employee stock ownership plans, are discussed.

Having a detailed, continuously updated business plan can mean the difference between obtaining financing and insolvency for a small business. The business plan should include a description of the business, and the following kinds of plans: product line, sales and marketing, product development, operations, organization, and financial. All loan applications made by a small business should include a summary of the amount requested, purpose of the loan, security offered, and proposed repayment terms.

There are many sources of financing available to small businesses of which entrepreneurs may not be aware. Avenues for loans include friends and relatives, life insurance policies, credit unions, commercial banks, savings and loans, personal loan companies, the Small Business Administration, and other government agencies. The process and requirements for applying for a loan are discussed, as are developing a good banker-client relationship and negotiating loan terms.
