Impact of agricultural management on nitrate concentrations in drainage waters

Article Abstract:

Nitrate concentrations in drainage waters coming from fields under two agricultural management practices were compared to determine the effect of management practices on drainage waters. Results show that the nitrate concentration increased by 7- to 10-fold when the fields were converted to a corn/soybean rotation and fertilized with anhydrous ammonia. Nitrate concentration in drainage waters also increased when a corn field change from a rotation of cor, oats and hay to corn/soybean and increasing the nitrogen fertilization rate.
