Airline deregulation creates clearing time turbulence

Article Abstract:

Mail delivery and check-clearing times for lockbox users may be affected by airline deregulation. Although deregulation will decrease mail times for companies located in larger cities, it may result in delays for companies located in smaller cities. Factors influencing mail times include earlier deadlines, altered flight schedules and routes, an increase in the number of airlines that move mail, and a decrease in flights scheduled to less populated areas. The potential inefficiencies and inequalities arising from deregulation may have a critical effect on disbursement and collection systems.

This caused growth in the current account deficit, which dampened the competitiveness of Mexico's domestic production and gave the Mexican economy a severe external imbalance.
