Stockbrokers in north west England are undergoing consolidation. Brewin Dolphin plans to acquire Wise Speke, and further takeovers are likely as companies seek to boost their market shares. Shaw and Co has been acquired by Charles Stanley from Fortis, and this and the Wise Speke acquisition both affect broking in Manchester, England. In Liverpool, England, Rathbone has acquired Neilson Cobbold following the acquisition of Laurence Keen. Succession problems among independents are also tending to encourage consolidation.

Article Abstract:

Stockbrokers in Liverpool, England, have seen changes such as the acquisition of Neilson Cobbold by Rathbone Brothers. Rathbone has expanded rapidly and may carry out further acquisitions. Meanwhile, Mike Burns has been appointed chief executive at BWD Securities. Burns joined the company in 1992 when he was appointed group administration director. He later became managing director at BWD Rensburg which is part of BWD Securities, and he will keep this title.
