Asia's best managed companies
Article Abstract:
A listing of best managed companies in Asia and Australasia based on a survey of 213 Asian, European and North American institutional investors managing investments in the regions for 144 funds is presented. The companies are domiciled in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and New Zealand. Companies are ranked on management, corporate strategy, financial accounts, forecasting, investor relations and treatment of minorities. The least impressively managed companies also are listed.

Jardine Fleming's hat trick

Jardine Fleming is the number one stockbroker in Asia, leading the pack for the third time since 1995, according to a ranking of the top 20 Asian stockbrokers. The other members of the top three Asian stockbrokers and their previous year's ranking are second-place, Credit Lyonnais Securities Asia, which was number 3 in 1996, and third-place ING Barings, which was number 2 in 1996. The US stockbrokers Merrill Lynch, MOrgan Stanley, Credit Suisse First Boston and Goldman Sachs increased their ranking among the top 20.

In an Asiamoney survey of fund managers, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing received the highest ranking. Companies were ranked in strategy, access to management, financial accounts, strategy, investor relations, small caps, and newly listed.
