BOC faces price competition, a strong pound sterling, and a slowdown in semiconductor manufacturing which is an important source of orders for the company's vacuum technology. BOC is a major industrial gas producer in the world market, and also designs and produces vacuum pumps, clean-room systems and instrumentation. The company has invested heavily which has pushed up its debt levels, and return on capital employed is dropping. BOC has introduced measures to reduce costs, but earnings growth is likely to be flat for the two years from 1998.
