Leading the net charge

Article Abstract:

Swedish banks have been leaders in the development of internet banking, and Merita Nordbanken, a Swedish-Finnish concern, is the largest internet bank worldwide. Customers are technically sophisticated and banks have encouraged them by cutting internet banking costs and increasing branch banking costs. New entrants have been deterred by the big banks setting up internet operations. Staff can be cut, and revenue can be increased by selling services such as onlione broking.

Banks flush with cash

Article Abstract:

The Swedish banking industry has made a strong recovery from the crisis of 1992 but some believe that the banks' relaxation of credit controls could see the spiral repeating itself. Some big banks are too large for the size of the Swedish market and weak credit demand has caused many to be overcapitalised. If the major banks are to continue growing they must expand into unfamilar sectors and into other Nordic markets, creating the possibility of further risks as overseas banks retaliate by entering the Swedish market.

Banks hold their own in tough market

Article Abstract:

The Swedish banking industry is faced with sluggish demand for loans which is affecting the banks' ability to grow. Loan losses have been reduced and this has boosted banks' profitability despite pressures on the growth of underlying business. Sweden also has a depressed domestic sector, since it is exporting companies which have performed well, and this has not helped the banks. The banks underwent a crisis in 1992, and state support is gradually being withdrawn as they recover.
