Billiton

Article Abstract:

Billiton is a mining company that benefited from interest in the sector in 1999, though the company has seen a stock price fall since 2000 began. The company is involved in the nickel and aluminum markets, which have performed well, though an economic downturn would affect metals companies. The company is a low-cost producer and has been cutting costs further, which should help its profits. The company's bioleaching technology should help with zinc and copper projects. There is concern about Billiton's involvement in the coal industry.

Article Abstract:

The coal industry has suffered a decline in Nottinghamshire, England, and six mines remain of 25 open in 1985. The region saw opposition to a miners' strike in the 1980s. RJB Mining has acquired mines from British Coal Corp, including four in Nottinghamshire. One of these mines will be closed. The UK government has set up the Coal Authority to regulate private companies operating in the coal industry, and this organization is based in Nottinghamshire.
