Bills to protect women seeking business loans could bury corporations

Article Abstract:

Bills introduced in both the House and Senate may require companies to provide written notice to people denied trade credit and the maintenance of credit denial records for more than two years. This legislation is designed primarily to protect women and minority entrepreneurs from discrimination when seeking business financing. The National Association of Credit Management feels this legislation would result in costly administrative burdens on business credit managers, especially for seasonal businesses that are deluged with credit requests during certain months. Credit managers do not believe that women or minorities seeking trade credit are discriminated against; credit is approved on the basis of financial and operating statements and financial stability.

Centralization, written reports key management of foreign exchange risk

Article Abstract:

A survey by Shawmut Corp. (Boston) of companies with more than $100 million in sales and overseas subsidiaries indicated that a centralized approach to foreign currency exposure management and written policies are crucial. Of the respondents, 67 percent said that foreign exchange risk management is more important today than it was five years ago; 60 percent of the respondents indicated that volatility is the most important issue facing foreign exchange managers today. Centralized management and written policies are critical in preventing losses due to increased volatility, a wider range of hedging instruments and the proliferation of information systems.

Financial services cleared from free-trade bargaining table

Article Abstract:

The free trade negotiations being conducted between the U.S. and Canada could affect U.S. treasury managers, if banking, insurance and financial services marketing are included in the talks. Currently, these topics are not on the free trade negotiation agenda. The free trade negotiations must result in a signed treaty before President Reagan leaves office in 1988.
