Bouygues: telecoms losses loom
Article Abstract:
Bouygues' profit for the three years from 1996 will be affected by losses from the group's telecoms business of some 1.2 billion French francs. France's accounting watchdog has put pressure on the company over its results for 1995. Bouygues' board has reversed a provision relating to start-up losses for Bouygues Telecom, reducing the company's loss for 1995, and postponing the impact until subsequent years. Bouygues aims to set up a third mobile phone network in France.

Peoples Phone: hanging up
Article Abstract:
Peoples Phone has abandoned a planned flotation and sacked its founder, Charles Wigoder, the company's chief executive. The company distributes handsets, acting as a middleman, and also selling airtime. The company, which holds some 7% of the UK market, faces intense competition, and consumers have become cautious over phone charges. Phone operators have also begun to sell directly to their customers. The company has postponed its flotation for an indefinite period.

Telecoms madness
Article Abstract:
Colt Telecom has carried out a share issue in an operation that values the company at more than 300 million pounds sterling. The company has a loop in London, England, used to deal with calls for big companies that are clients. There is a similar loop in Frankfurt, Germany. The company is not likely to be profitable in the short term and bids are unlikely due to an option held by a major shareholder. The shares in this company appear to be expensive, analysts argue.
